Gender Recognition Act Campaign

Welsh Underground Network Statement:

“It has come to our recent attention that the British Government are planning on corroborating with certain Anti-Trans organisations to reform the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).

During a time that transphobia is rampant in our society, on a disproportionate rise in the UK, the government is making a decision that will surely axe the already limited rights of Trans and Non-Binary people. Woman’s Place, Fair Play Women & Trans Widows are all well known Anti-Trans hate groups that will only further the struggle for an already oppressed group.

Women’s Place claims they’re “…not campaigning against trans rights. We are campaigning for women’s rights”, however, excluding trans women from this aim is failing to campaign for all women’s rights; Women who desperately need protection from the abuse of their rights.

In the case of Trans Widows, their Twitter bio says “(pronouns: hoo/ha)”, a shamefully obvious disrespect towards the trans community. We don’t we have to explain the hateful connotations of women who’s partners come out as trans being referred to as “widows”.

In a 2020 report by Galop, it was found that through 2019-2020 4 in 5 had experienced transphobic abuse, whilst a quarter of trans people experienced assault, or threat of assault. This is happening in all areas of life for these people: on the street, in work and even in their own homes for 25% of trans people. To be in a position that allows you to create a better environment for these people and yet act completely counterproductively is abhorrent.

We urge people to oppose the involvement of all these organisations from having any influence in the GRA. The Women and Equalities Committee needs to extend their fight for equality to all; this includes Trans and Non-Binary people. Instead you treat these people with contempt and ultimately fail your job in ensuring the safety of Trans women and equal rights for all.

Trans women are women, Trans men are men. To deny them their right to self-determination is unfair and frankly disgusting.

Solidarity always,
The Welsh Underground Network.

“⁩Dear ,

It has come to my recent attention that the Government are planning on corroborating with certain Anti-Trans organisations to reform the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05l0DJ-wbuM in this speech, Julie Bindel makes the suggestion that trans women are not female- this is blatant transphobia. (6 minutes 45 seconds in).

In the case of Trans Widows, their twitter bio says “(pronouns: hoo/ha)”, a shamefully obvious disrespect towards the trans community. I also don’t think I have to explain the hateful connotations of women who’s partners come out as trans being “widows”.

You’re failing not only your constituents, but also the wider trans community and we will not stand for this.

We urge you to oppose the involvement of all these organisations from having any influence in the GRA. Yours Sincerely,
