When was Wales? A History of the Welsh

‘When has Wales been able to describe itself as an independent nation and will it ever be able to do so in the future? The question of national identity has affected the Welsh throughout their history. Drawing on myth, legend and poetry and on the talents and ambitions of soldiers, labourers, politicians and churchmen the author tells the story of the Welsh with an understanding of his fellow countrymen.’

When was Wales?‘, by Gwyn Alf Williams, is one of, if not the best history of Wales. A companion piece to ‘The Dragon has two tongues‘, the book analyzes Welsh history and nationhood from a Marxist perspective. Unfortunately, the book has long since been out of print, and fairly hard (or expensive!) to find.

For the first time, we are proud to put this iconic book online, for all to read.
